Things to Consider When Storing Wine · Thursday May 1, 2008

Since its invention, wine has been one of the most popular beverages in the entire world.

Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is produced using fermentation. The sugar that is used to make the wine normally comes from grapes that are combined with yeast.

Wine making is a very complex process. As a result, wines can be separated into many different categories based on their quality, taste, vinification process, vintage and style.

Despite all of this, no matter what kind of wine you drink, you need to think about some way to store all of the wine you have in your collection. A wine that is properly stored will have a richer flavor and will certainly reach its full potential.

You should take a few things into consideration when storing wine.

1. Humidity – When storing wine, you always want to keep the humidity level of the room in mind. Extreme humidity levels can degrade the quality of the cork. When the cork is damaged, then the aroma and the flavor of the wine weakens.

The optimal humidity levels for the room you store wine in should be from 50% to 80%. The best possible humidity level for storing wine is around 70%.

It is important to remember that humidity never affects the wine itself. Instead, the humidity affects the cork or the cardboard box that the wine is stored in. Once the cork is destroyed, the wine will be exposed to air or outside particles.

2. Temperature – The second factor that you should take into consideration when storing wine is temperature. Erratic and irregular temperature changes can drastically affect the flavor and quality of your wine. When exposed to inconsistent temperatures, wines can age prematurely.

The best temperature for storing wine is normally from 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Dimness or Level of Obscurity – Light will age wine quickly. Wine stored in clear bottles will age at a faster rate than wine stored in colored bottles.

Despite this, light can still affect wine stored in colored bottles. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can give the wine a bad odor and can become permanently damaged.

Storage is extremely important in order to maintain the quality of your wine. Wines that are well-kept can be sold for more money than wines that aren’t well-kept. This is how important good storage practices can be.
